Anyway, I found a driver update for this this modem on the Dell website which I installed. Then, at some point, I ran Windows Update and noticed a driver update for a CXT modem software update released November 11, 2003 (989 KB) for an AC97 Soft V92. Is this the same modem or a different software part of it?? OR, is it a different modem that some I8200's have instead of the Actiontec MD56ORD?? Is that an 'O' or a '0'??

LOL Obviously, if these are two different modems I don't want to install the later and I need to dig my spurs into Microsoft to figure out why they can't modify Windows Update to exclude the Drivers section just like one can with the Windows section. It turns out that the AC97 and MD56 are the same modems.

One looks like a later driver version then the other. No one I talked to at Dell Tech Support knew this or cared to figure it out-thoroughly disgusted with them again-but no one from Dell has sent my a survey yet to comment on their service. M$ gave me a free incident for XP OEM! Even their phone tech would have been happy if I'd leave him alone with this problem but it didn't happen. I explained and explained and questioned and questioned and finally the tech suggested the obvious which I might have tried on my own but never did-remove the modem driver and reboot and see what happens. This is actually a great troubleshooting technique any one with driver troubles or Windows Update driver troubles might try. The I8200 rebooted, found the modem hardware and apparently found an AC97 driver and installed it instead of the MD56 I originally assumed it needed off the Dell website after I did a clean install of XP.
